Expert Preventive Care

Routine dental cleanings play an important role in maintaining long-term oral health. At Elwell Family Dentistry, our hygienists provide thorough, gentle cleanings designed to remove plaque and tartar that daily brushing and flossing cannot reach. As part of our preventive approach, oral cancer screenings are also performed to help monitor changes in the tissues of the mouth. Comfort, consistency, and prevention are always our priorities as we work to support healthy teeth and gums. Our dentists and team prioritize your comfort during visits while safeguarding your teeth and gums against decay and disease.

Advantages of Regular Professional Cleanings

Professional cleanings help maintain oral health beyond what can be achieved at home alone. During these visits, our hygienists remove buildup that can contribute to cavities and gum disease while monitoring changes in your oral health over time. Regular preventive care also allows potential concerns to be identified early, often reducing the need for more extensive treatment later.

Benefits may include:

  • Removal of plaque and tartar buildup
  • Reduced risk of cavities and periodontal disease
  • Improved gum health
  • Fresher breath
  • Ongoing monitoring of oral health changes

What to Expect During Your Cleaning Appointment

Adult’s First Visit
Each patient who is new to our office begins with a comprehensive exam. During this appointment, we discuss your dental concerns, goals, and dental history, review your medical history and current medications. We carefully chart all teeth, existing restorations, and any areas of concern. An oral cancer screening and periodontal screening are completed to assess your overall oral health. Diagnostic X-rays and intraoral photographs may also be taken to help you better understand your oral health and participate in treatment planning.

If your oral health allows, a routine general prophylaxis (cleaning) may be completed during this visit. If more extensive periodontal or therapeutic care is recommended, we will review our findings and schedule appropriate treatment.

Children’s First Visit
We love welcoming children to Elwell Family Dentistry and strive to make their first dental experience positive and comfortable. Parents are welcome to bring children along to appointments beforehand so they can become familiar with our office and team.

We typically recommend a child’s first dental visit around age 3 or when they are able to comfortably participate. During the visit, if your child allows, we may take necessary X-rays, gently clean their teeth, apply fluoride, and complete a doctor exam. Each step is guided by your child’s comfort level and readiness. Our goal is to build trust, confidence, and healthy habits that support lifelong oral health.
